In this VIPARSPECTRA XS1000 review let’s start by looking at the three sections of this LED Grow Light.
Aluminum Frame and WaterProof
The VIPARSPECTRA XS Series LED lights uses a ridged aluminum frame construction with 1/4 inch fins on the top for great heat dissipation. An acrylic coating on the lower provide great waterproofing for the LED chips.
MEAN WELL XLG Driver

Samsung LM301B LED Chips
This XS1000 grow light adopts Samsung LM301B LEDs for a luminous efficacy reach of 220 lm/W. The LEDs provide for 3000K warm white, 5000K white, 660nm deep red, and 730nm IR light.
Aside from the size, there are only two notable differences between the VIPARSPECTRA XS1000 and the VIPARSPECTRA XS1500 or other XS Series LED Lights; that is the XLG Driver, and the intensity knob.
Previously the intensity knobs on other XS Series lights went from 5% to 100%. On the VIPARSPECTRA XS1000 the knob allows for 0%, or an off position.
The other VIPARSPECTRA XS Series indoor grow LED Light come with an HLG Mean Well driver, these come with the Mean Well XLG-150-H-AB Driver.
The XLG Driver compares to the legacy HLG series, XLG series designs as an economic version, compact size, high efficiency (up to 90%) AC/DC LED drivers. XLG drivers come with an innovative design which improves surge protection level (Line-Earth: 6KV and Line-Line: 4KV) allowing for more reliable installations, which is especially crucial for outdoor and damp applications.
The Frame on these VIPARSPECTRA LED Grow lights is a rigid aluminum, with about 1/4 inch heat fins for heat reduction. The XLG Driver sits about 3/4 inch off the top of the frame on two rails allowing the driver to circulate air and also cool properly.
Why LED Grow Lights over HID Grow lights
Since you are here and reading about LED Grow lights, you probably are already indoor growing or interested in starting an indoor grow. If you are new and still researching, then you might have heard about other indoor growing lights such as HID, MH and LPS. If you ask most indoor growers, they are either using LED indoor grow lights, or switching to them. One of the main reason is cost.
Indoor LED grow lights do have a slightly higher cost over HID grow lights. This is true if you don’t have to cool the growing area, as HID grow light emit much more heat. LED lights run cooler, and therefore can be used in a wider spectrum of environments and even closer to the plants for better light intensity and penetration.
But it’s not always about the initial cost, but the cost to operate and maintain. LED Grow Lights consume less wattage per light output (31 to 35% less than standard HID) and will maintain their consistency longer. Most HID grow lights will start to loose 10 to 15% efficiency after 2 to 5 grows. This mean you will need to replace the bulbs often for sustained efficiency.
So why do some people still use HID indoor grow lighting? Some believe that HID light tend to have a better penetration of light to the underside of the plants and stem. This is still up for debate, and the research is a bit swayed and inconclusive right now.
