Reviews of PowerVision PowerDolphin Explorer
Reviews of the PowerVision PowerDolphin are a bit mixed, some love it, some not so much. As with many aquatic electrical equipment, you do have to take care of this ROV drone. After each use PowerVision suggests you:
- Rinse the Dolphin with fresh water. (IMPORTANT: The battery slot is not water proof while the battery is taken out. DON’T directly wash it.)
- Place it in a open space for several hours to completely dry out the Dolphin.
- Put back to the box/bag.
About the 4K Camera
There is one 4k camera with 2 joints: 1 manual and 1 electric. The electric joint only functions when in Underwater mode. The image quality as good as you would expect with 4K resolution. The focus is fixed, but this doesn’t appear to be a concern for the environment in which this is used. Image stabilization, on the other hand, is lacking and means that footage will be very bumpy, even in relatively mild water conditions. In choppy waters the drone will bounce around quite a bit.
Navigation of the PowerDolphin
The PowerDolphin Explorer does not have any obstacle-detecting sensors or hardware-stabilized cameras, which can make maintaining situational awareness and navigating very difficult at times. It also means you need to be particularly careful operating around people or rocky outcroppings, as this drone can move at an impressive speed while in Normal mode. the Return to Home function appears to function reliably, but again, due to the lack of obstacle detection there is no guarantee the drone won’t strike a rock or person on the way back home. With an RTH speed of 4.5 m/s this could cause injury to a person, and given the location of the camera at the very front of the drone, any sort of collision could cause a lot of damage to the drone camera as well. The self-righting capability also seems to work reliably, even though I did see where someone had to go retrieve the drone because it did not self-right.
The Fish finder, and App seem to have spotty reviews.
